Are Good Swim Briefs Worth the Investment?

The short answer is yes. A good swim brief is absolutely worth the investment.

As someone who has spent more than 15 years designing men’s underwear and swimwear for brands like Calvin Klein, Kenneth Cole, and Tommy John, I’ve seen firsthand how the quality of a swimsuit affects everything from durability to confidence. After years of designing and developing swimwear, I eventually launched BADBUI to create the kind of swim briefs I always felt were missing from the market.

Most people think a swim brief is just a small piece of fabric. In reality, a well-made swim brief involves thoughtful design, engineering, and materials that dramatically impact how it looks, feels, and lasts over time.

Here’s what actually separates a good swim brief from a cheap one.

Fabric Quality Makes a Huge Difference

One of the biggest differences between cheap and high-quality swimwear is the fabric.

Lower-quality swim briefs often use inexpensive materials that quickly lose their shape. After a few wears in chlorine or saltwater, the fabric becomes droopy and stops recovering properly. Once that happens, the swimsuit no longer fits the way it was designed to.

Higher-quality fabrics are engineered to maintain stretch and recovery. That means the suit continues to hold its shape even after repeated use.

Cheap fabrics also tend to become thin and transparent when wet. Over time they can pill, stretch unevenly, and simply look worn out.

When the fabric is right, the swimsuit maintains its structure and continues to look sharp season after season.

The Details Most People Don’t Notice

Another major difference is trim quality.

Small details like drawstrings, grommets, labels, and branding hardware play a huge role in how a swimsuit holds up over time.

Cheap suits usually use generic drawstrings and low-grade elastics that deteriorate quickly. After a while the drawstring frays, the elastic stops recovering, and the entire garment starts to feel tired.

High-quality swimwear invests in better trims and finishing details. Those pieces may seem minor, but they dramatically improve durability and the overall look of the garment.

Lining and Construction Matter More Than You Think

One of the most common shortcuts in inexpensive swimwear is partial lining.

Many brands only line part of the swimsuit to reduce production costs. While this saves money, it creates uneven stretch throughout the garment and can negatively affect the overall fit.

Fully lined swim briefs distributes stretch evenly across the entire piece. It also provides better structure and support, which is especially important when you’re active in the water.

Construction quality also plays a big role. Cheap suits often have messy stitching that can break over time. Higher-quality construction ensures the seams remain strong and clean even after heavy use.

Fit Is the Biggest Differentiator

From both a design perspective and real-world experience, fit is the biggest difference between a great swimsuit and a bad one.

A well-designed swim brief supports the body and maintains its shape throughout the day. Cheap suits tend to sag once they get wet and gradually lose their structure over time.

I spend a lot of time in environments where swim briefs is front and center, from Fire Island beach days to pool parties in Palm Springs. You can immediately tell when someone is wearing a poorly made swimsuit.

Cheap swim briefs are often thin and see-through. The flimsy fabric lacks structure and fails to support the body properly when wet.

A well-made swim brief simply looks better on the body and holds its shape for hours.

A Quality Swimsuit Lasts Multiple Seasons

Another major advantage of investing in a good swimsuit is longevity.

A properly constructed suit with high-quality fabric and trims can easily last multiple seasons. The details stay fresh, the fabric retains its shape, and the overall fit remains consistent over time.

Cheap swim briefs often needs to be replaced after a single season because the fabric stretches out or the construction begins to fail.

When you consider cost over time, a higher-quality swim brief often ends up being the better value.

My Philosophy When Designing Swimwear

When I designed swim briefs for BADBUI, my goal was to address the exact problems I had seen throughout my career in swimwear design.

Every BADBUI swim brief is fully lined. We also avoided generic trims entirely. The details are fully custom, including the lining, drawstring, drawstring tips, silicone rubberized logo, and hexagon gunmetal grommets.

Construction quality was another major focus. We spent a significant amount of time perfecting the fit so the swim brief is sexy enough for a pool party but still provides enough coverage and support for activities like swimming or beach volleyball.

A good swimsuit should feel confident, supportive, and durable in real-world environments.

Final Thoughts

A swim brief might seem like a simple garment, but the difference between a cheap one and a well-made one is substantial.

Higher-quality swimwear offers:

  • Better fabric performance

  • Stronger construction

  • Thoughtful design details

  • Superior fit and support

  • Longer lifespan

When those elements come together, the result is a swimsuit that not only looks better but performs better and lasts longer.

That’s why, in my experience as a designer and someone who spends plenty of time at the beach and pool, a good swimsuit is absolutely worth the investment. On the market for your first swim brief, read here?
