Why Are More Men Wearing Swim Thongs at the Beach?

If you’ve spent any time at queer beaches, pool parties, or summer festivals lately, you may have noticed something that used to be rare. More men are wearing swim thongs openly and confidently. What was once considered niche or taboo has become a visible part of modern beach culture.

From my perspective building BADBUI and working in underwear and swimwear for years, this shift did not happen overnight. It reflects a broader change in fashion, confidence, and how men express themselves.

Customer Demand Showed the Shift First

The first sign for me came directly from customers.

People began asking whether BADBUI would introduce thongs into the collection. At the same time, I was seeing them more often at queer summer events and social gatherings. When you hear repeated customer interest and then see the same trend happening in real life, it becomes clear something bigger is happening.

Fashion trends move in cycles. Over time we have seen a blending of traditionally masculine and feminine aesthetics. Men's grooming has expanded. Makeup for men has become more normalized. Even color trends that were once considered feminine, like nude tones and blush palettes, have entered men’s fashion.

At the same time, silhouettes from past eras started coming back. Crop tops and short shorts, which you often see in vintage photographs of queer communities from the 70s and 80s, have re-emerged in modern fashion. Swim thongs are part of that same return. In many ways, we have come full circle.

Confidence Is the Real Appeal

In my experience hosting BADBUI underwear events and being around nightlife and party culture, wearing revealing swimwear always changes the energy in a room.

When someone puts on a thong or something more revealing, it often unlocks a different level of confidence. It becomes a statement. There is an attitude behind it that says, "I am not worried about what people think."

Once one person puts themselves out there, it encourages others to loosen up as well. The energy shifts. People feel freer to express themselves because someone else has already broken the barrier.

I have seen it happen countless times at parties. Someone shows up wearing something bold, and suddenly everyone feels a little more liberated.

My First Time Wearing a Thong

Ironically, wearing a thong was not something I originally saw myself doing.

The first time I tried one, it felt strange. The fit was different from anything I was used to. But once I got past that initial adjustment, it started to feel natural.

I remember the first night I wore a BADBUI neon yellow thong as part of my look going out to the club. At first I felt a little unsure, but then I leaned into the energy of it. Once I channeled that inner bad bitch, everything clicked.

Suddenly I felt powerful. Confident. CUNTY.

People around me responded immediately. I started getting reactions like, "Okay, I see you." That moment made me understand the power behind the thong. It is not just a piece of fabric. It is an attitude.

Now I wear one when I want to tap into that energy. It becomes part of the persona for the night.

Not All Swim Thongs Are the Same

One thing people often misunderstand is that swim thongs still need to function as swimwear.

From a product development standpoint, they should be designed for activity. Swimming, beach volleyball, walking around the beach. A good swim thong needs enough structure and durability to perform in those environments.

Some thongs are extremely thin or delicate and are really intended to be underwear. Those are not designed for movement or water.

If someone plans to wear a thong as swimwear, it should be substantial enough to handle real activity. Fabric, construction, and support all matter. A well-designed piece should feel secure whether you are swimming or spending the day at the beach.

Where Men Are Wearing Them Now

Today you see swim thongs most commonly in environments where self expression is celebrated.

Queer pool parties are a big one. Places like Fire Island and Palm Springs have always pushed beachwear culture forward. You will also see them at summer festivals, parties, and clubs.

In many of these settings, swim thongs are not just beachwear. They are part of a look. People use them to show personality, confidence, and a sense of fun.

It becomes a statement piece that says something about the energy you are bringing to the party.

A Bigger Cultural Shift

The growing popularity of swim thongs reflects something deeper happening in culture.

For a long time, especially within the queer community, a very specific type of masculinity dominated what was considered desirable. If you did not fit that mold, you were often pushed aside.

Now that mindset is changing.

More feminine aesthetics are being embraced. People are experimenting with style, gender expression, and personal identity in ways that were less accepted in the past. The lines between masculine and feminine fashion have softened.

That shift has allowed more people to be authentically themselves.

When someone chooses to wear a swim thong, it can represent freedom from the old idea of "this is for women, I cannot wear that." Fashion becomes less about rules and more about what makes you feel good.

And honestly, that has made men’s fashion a lot more interesting.

The Future of Men's Swimwear

As confidence and self expression continue to evolve, swimwear will keep evolving with it.

What once felt bold eventually becomes normal. Swim briefs followed that path decades ago. Now swim thongs are beginning to do the same.

At the end of the day, the reason more men are wearing them is simple. They make people feel confident, empowered, and free to express themselves.

And once someone experiences that feeling, it is hard to go back. 🩲🌊
